This online toolkit contains exercises to help you practise the main skills needed for an effective coaching style of leadership. Use this to self-manage your learning or use it with the support of a coach. The toolkit also contains tips for dealing with a range of common people management issues.
Internal mentoring is highly valuable to support career development, enhance skills, break down barriers, create better teamwork, and more. This is the methodology we use to help our clients develop internal mentoring:
- Scope: Identify programme aims, the target population, and roles of different players, such as HR.
- Communication: Communicate the programme
- Application process: Both prospective mentors and mentees complete questionnaires. These help individuals think through their needs and are then later used in the matching process.
- Skills workshop: One day workshop for mentors and mentees covering goal-setting, the basic skills, responsibilities, such as confidentiality, logistics etc, and a speed-dating process to start matching mentors and mentees.
- Matching process: Complete the matching process.
- Contracting: Formalise the relationship through preparation of signed agreements.
- Supervision: Regular check-ins and supervision to ensure the relationships are working well, and to resolve any problems.

Here we provide coaching just at the point when the person needs the skills and will apply them, for example, just before a performance appraisal conversation. The coaching provides a mix of targeted advice and support, with a conceptual understanding of the topic and the chance to plan the forthcoming meeting. It often includes advice on difficult situations.
