Just-inTime coaching is a term we use to describe coaching that is provided just at the point when the person needs the skills, and will apply them. The coaching provides a mix of targeted advice and support, with a conceptual understanding of the topic, and the chance to practise the skills before doing it for rea. It often includes advice on difficult situations.

 

Case study:

In this example, the requirement was to raise the people management capability of all the team leaders in one department of this financial services business. Instead of arranging the usual training course, we coached each team leader individually. The coaching took place just before performance appraisals conversations were due, and so the aim was essential to help people prepare for these, and we used completed self-appraisal forms for reference. Importantly, we also included in the sessions, models and techniques around performance appraisal. As we covered the same models and techniques with each person, much as you would on a training course, this helped impart a consistent approach across the department. This Just-inTime coaching helped achieve insightful conversations, and improved relationships.
