Brief For Lionel Smallwood; Partner, Property Appraisor

You are a partner in the Property department of Hammerstein Rogers, a leading firm of solicitors. You are about to carry out an appraisal on Franklyn Wrightson, a solicitor four years qualified. Franklyn joined Hammerstein Rogers on leaving Bristol University.

Franklyn is a very bright, competent young man. He has an extremely personable manner, particularly with the other partners and with clients. He can, however, be quite arrogant and abrupt especially with the support staff and articled clerks. You do not like this. You believe in treating everyone in an agreeable way. You try to run your department as a friendly, tightly- knit team. You wish your team to be viewed in this way by the rest of the firm. Anyway, you believe that by being friendly, to the Print Department, for instance, they are more likely to put themselves out for you.

You have reviewed Franklyn’s appraisal from last year and also the self-appraisal that Franklyn has just completed. Last year, you did not mention anything about him being inclined to be arrogant. Partly you avoided the issue, partly you found it a difficult subject to raise because you did not have specific evidence, just impressions that you got by generally observing behaviour. But, recently, you have had complaints from one of the articled clerks and from the Print Room supervisor. You will have to mention it this time...

People in business today want outstanding learning and development, when they need it, at a time that suits them, and delivered in a manner that fits their learning styles and preferences. Businesses need people to come to grips with new challenges quickly. There is no time for catch up and it is vital to quickly decide which strategic opportunity to take advantage of, and then be able to act quicly. This requires a deep understanding of your people, and who has the potential and the aspiration to take on a particular challenge. It requires a workforce that is constantly learning and developing in line with the business needs on the horizon.

For the first time, businesses have several generations working side by side in the workplace, with different styles and perspectives. The standard approach to training and development is no longer appropriate. In its place, it is vital to have a range of tools and programmes that individuals can personalise, and make their own.
