Background - Part 1

You are advising Dennis Mansell, the Personnel Manager of the Handel Credit Company.

Handel's is one of the UK's leading leasing and credit companies. It currently has its head office in Slough and two other offices in the City of London and in Windsor. In six months time, all of Handel's employees will be moving into a new, purpose-built, high-tech building in Maidenhead.

 

The majority of the staff will be unaffected by the move. In fact, all 2,000 staff currently based at the offices in Slough and Windsor will be able to commute easily to Maidenhead. Of the 1,300 employed in the City, many live in Essex and would therefore need to relocate if they wish to continue working for Handel.

 

The Company has made generous relocation and redundancy arrangements. They have also pledged that there will be no compulsory redundancies but anyone from the City office who choses not to relocate will be offered generous redundancy plus considerable outplacement help. Few of the clerical and secretarial staff will accept the offer. The majority of the managerial staff, some 700, are intending to relocate.

 

The decision to relocate to the new site at Maidenhead was taken some two years ago. Dennis, as Personnel Manager at Slough, was given the responsibility for the human resources side of the relocation project.
